Im from Honduras that is to clarify it for everyone that has come to ask and/or doubt my nationality, all in good fun.  As you might have read some place or the other im a Biologist with an emphasis on Botany (Bota what? yes I know my plants good enough… but they arent my thing) Im very in to Birding and Avian research, that is when there is enough money to go around and invest it on going to the woods and all of that.

My whole name is Luís Daniel Germer Sánchez, if youre wondering about my last name, my grand dad came from Germany sometime in the early 20th century (dont ask if I speak German because I dont, it´s too complicated and guttural, but a very poweful language in it´s own way).

I was born ina banana plantation in La Lima near San Pedro Sula on the wonderful year of our lord of 1980, so that makes me…well you do the math. I don´t remember much from growing up, except that I didnt like school nor school mates for that matter, but hey here I am nevertheless.

On the personal note im Happily married to the most gorgeous Honduran woman you´ll ever come across, she is also a Biologist very into birds herself, we make a kickass team.

What else….hmmm details details, dont watch TV, it´s horrible, the shows the general falseness they sell you, so I prefer gaming not online off course it´s too boring. Also am Big music fan of all kinds and types of genra…diversity is what makes us grand I think.

Im not a very political person but I try to keep up with current worldwide events so conversation never goes dull…hey how bout them world conflicts? pretty crappy huh?

I used to run a Birding tour operator  out of the back of my truck it didnt get enough clients, it was sort of frustrating but in a way it delivered a constructive perspective on my reality, in a way you could say that birds helped me establish goals in my life and find a path to follow. If you are convinced you are doing something valuable than its not a waste of time

I started this Blog on August 2006, the original idea was to set up a web site with all the buttons and the what nots, but I realized Blogging is way more easier fun!…I even installed a download section that makes the blog more constructive, helpful, better.

Im working for whoever pays the bills, which is great, it gives me all the time in the world and a wide criteria for jobs, from research, birding, wetjobs you name it if the money is good im down with it, ….so yeah why not, it´s a good job all in all.Currently the wife and myself have finished writing a filed guide for the north coast of Honduras, we did so because they told us we couldnt do it….there you go there it is. want a copy ill sign it for ya. it was a fun gig that helped us appreciate the hard work and time invested on coming up with descriptions of birds and image plates.

Anyhow, if you are ever interested in going around the boonies searching for some nice birds or other animals to watch gimme a ring or send me an email or post a comment on the blog or send some smoke signals or whatever method of communication that works best for you, It´s always nice to meet new folk to chat about world events.

Danny Germer 2016 onwards

Wow, 10 years do go fast!

So… Ok, what has happened, well back in ´06 few people were into the whole Birding/Birdwatching thing here in Honduras, in 2010 a group of grassroots radicals led by yours truly came up with a concoction by the name of ASHO (Asociación Hondureña de Ornitología) which is now a springly NGO doing things related to promoting birdwatching. Thats nice, I might add that it was the extra push birds needed to get attention.

As for myself I quit ASHO in 2013 because I was utterly spent, tired, frustrated. You name it I had it. Stopped working with birds for almost 4 years until I realized that my mission was still not done. There was still some fight in me to go over the frustration. I recently started birdwatching again (not birding), Im beyond life lists and twitching or whatever other shit that is. There are a lot «pfishers and listers» out now, and thats good, I guess that was the whole idea back in 2010, or even in 2006 when this all began.

If youve been follwing Hondubirding, you´ll see that now its Hondubirding Roots you can still find us on Facebook and the group is slowly getting back on track. Why roots? because im going back to where it all began, back to when all birds where mystical, magical and mesmerizing (3 with an M), over the years Ego, bullshit, money, ethics and other crap made me lose my compass on birds, Alas!I wish nothing of this ever happens to a fellow bird enthusiast, and if you ever think you are in the doldrums, gimme a call, I know it sucks, but all thing must pass.

Nowadays im doing environmental consultancies, slowly but surely getting my fitness back with birds and hoping to land a decent gig or grant sometime soon. As always working on Avian research finding the next big thing to lose my brain on and come up with some papers tyo publish. Im still married, got a 6 year old and a dog… and a mortgage too! Falling in love again with birds, trying to rebuild bridges with other bird enthusiasts who still have the spark of giving people a chance to know birds because they are feathery cool, not because there is money to be made.

Im a hard critic on that Birding in by itself is conservation, I believe they go hand in hand but not always and there is a thin line between  conservation and greedy business. Believe me, youll hear from me if you screw up. Im glad there are so many people enjoying birds via listing or plain out checking´em out. Enjoy them any way you can.

If you ask me what it is that I do… I do things, No master, no leash, no restraints, I do things because its fun. If you wanna help, do so, dont be afraid. If not, enjoy from the sidelines… ill keep doing´em because thats me and someone has to.

Im always game for some old fashioned bird enjoyment, as I said no Birding, lets Birdwatch
